CHAPEL HILL (WNCN)- The University of North Carolina has activated it sirens after police report an armed and dangerous person on or near campus, according to the school’s website.

UNC sent out an alert at 8:55 Wednesday morning alerting students of the situation.

“When the sirens sound, stop classroom and campus activities; all UNC operations are temporarily suspended. Remain inside your classroom or a safe place in your building unless police or University personnel instruct you to take a specific action, such as to evacuate a building, stay out of a certain part of campus, or go to your residence hall and stay there,” the alert warned students and staff.

UNC Public Safety tweed out that there was an unconfirmed report of an armed person near the ROTC Building / Venable Hall.

Multiple streets near the ROTC Building were blocked due to police activity.

Individuals who see suspicious activity are asked to call 911. Authorities asked people to not call 911 or the Department of Public Safety to ask for information about the current incident. Police phone lines need to remain open for emergency communications.
