ELIZABETHTOWN — The Bladen Journal’s staff recently welcomed Brendaly Vega to the newsroom as a summer intern.

Vega, a 2012 graduate of east Bladen High, is a student at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where she is working toward a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a concentration in journalism. She is on track to graduate in May 2018.

“We are very fortunate to have Brendaly join us for the summer,” said @W. Curt Vincent, general manager/editor of the Bladen Journal. “She brings a refreshing burst of energy and enthusiasm to the table, and has a willingness to learn a wide variety of newspaper functions, which will give her plenty of flexibility.”

Vega has been a regular contributor to the UNCP newspaper, The Pine Needle, as a staff writer. During the next school year, she will serve as the newspaper’s photo editor.

“I hope to become a newspaper journalist or photo journalist, so I’m happy to have the opportunity to learn at the Bladen Journal,” Vega said. “I’ve been familiar with the Bladen Journal, since it’s my hometown newspaper, and I’m looking forward to the experience.”

Vega, who said she has always enjoyed writing and may also create her own blog someday, will be given the chance to write about and photograph a wide variety of events in Bladen County during the next several weeks.

“Brendaly will get a good idea what it means to be a community newspaper journalist,” Vincent said.

If anyone has a story idea for Vega, call 910-862-4163 during regular business hours.
