BLADENBORO — The little wheels came out for a big cause on Friday morning when Little Hands Daycare of Bladenboro hosted its annual Trike-A-Thon to help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
To assist in the effort, St. Jude sends in supplies such as stickers, information flyers to be passed out to parents and the community, and much more.
Deputy Robert Duggan of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office helped with the Trike-A-Thon by escorting the trikers down Butler Mill Road and back, ensuring the safety of the children and allowing other cars to make their way around safely.
Anita Hall, owner of Little Hands, explained that she looks forward to doing the event every year and she loves being able to help give to a great cause.
“The children know what to expect each year, so it is always a successful event because they behave well and have a fun time,” said Hall.
Once Little Hands Daycare has totaled up the donations from the event, Hall says they plan to match the total and double their donations before sending it in to St. Jude.
There were 52 kids total participating in the Trike-A-Thon, ranging from age 7 months to 12 years old. The modes of transportation consisted of trikes, bikes, buggies, strollers and even a Power Wheels.
“The event was a huge success, and I am glad that we get to do this with our children,” said Hall.
Hall also explained that traffic is very supportive and considerate with the Trike-A-Thon going on and that they have even received donations from passing drivers in the past.
Every year after the donations have been sent in, St. Jude sends back a thank-you card and a certificate that Little Hands puts on the wall to honor their support.
The St. Jude Trike-A-Thon is a fun event that allows kids to make a difference while also teaching kids “riding-toy safety” with the help of St. Jude Trike-A-Thon mascots Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny.
People who register to do a Trike-A-Thon will receive a kit with all the needed supplies, including storybooks, DVDs, and much more.
