— There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Historical Building in Bladenboro at 2 p.m. Colonel Ballard from West Bladen High School will be the guest speaker. There will be food and entertainment. Everyone is invited.

June 1

— Shipman Memorial Scholarship is seeking applicants for the scholarship in memory of William “Dewey” Shipman, Sr. and Zenah Mae Clarida Shipman. Applications for Bladen and Columbus counties are available May 1-July 22 and are available by calling 910-874-1516. Applicant must be a 2016 high school graduate with a GPA of 2.5, and applications must include a letter of acceptance from a 4-year post-secondary college, a recent photo, class rank, an official sealed high school transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a non-family member. Applications can be mailed to St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, 16297 Twist Hickory Road, Bladenboro, N.C. 28320 and must be received by July 22.

— The 21st Ammon Blueberry Festival will be held with free admission. Pancake breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., parade at 10 a.m. followed with opening ceremony, blueberry auction, entertainment, crafts, food, antique and classic car/truck cruise-In and show. Family fun, games and more.

— Lower Cape Fear Hospice will host a free three-hour workshop, “Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia,” from 9 a.m. to noon at Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church, located at 800 W. Broad St. in Elizabethtown. Melanie Bunn will be the featured speaker. She is founder of Bunn Consulting and is a training specialist for Alzheimers North Carolina. She volunteers as an Alzheimer’s support group facilitator and was named 2001 Educator of the Year by the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Lunch will be provided. — The Bladen County Public Library will be having a Kick-Off Summer Reading Program, “The Rockstar Magic of Chris and Neal,” at 6:30 p.m. at the main branch in Elizabethtown.
