ELIZABETHTOWN — Ian Hooks of the Cape Fear Council, Boy Scouts of America visited the Elizabethtown Rotary Club on Wednesday. The club holds the charter for Boy Scout Troop 600 in Elizabethtown.

The Cape Fear Council, BSA is made up of of four districts — the Coastal District, the Lakes District, Lumber River District and the NE Cape Fear District. The Cape Fear Council serves a nine county region within those four districts. The counties served are Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover, Northern New Hanover, Columbus, Pender, Robeson, Scotland and Hoke.

Hooks told the club that he serves as district executive with the Lakes District of the Cape Fear Council. The Lakes District is made up of Bladen and Columbus counties.

Hooks said the Lakes District had 14 scouts to achieve the rank of Eagle this past year. Hooks added that, of those, Troop 600 had the largest group of Eagle Scouts this past year with total of four. They were John Dean Alsup IV, Jackson Burney, Andrew Shepherd, and Jackson Scott Ussery. He noted that Burney was also the speaker for the entire class fo Eagle Scouts at this year’s banquet in Wilmington.

Hooks said that the Lakes District also experienced growth in membership this past year as did the Cape Fear Council.

Hooks also said there is exciting news in the Cape Fear Council. He said that there is both a Venturing program and an Explorers program that folks can take part in. These two programs are open to both men and women, said Hooks.

Hooks also discussed Camp Bowers which is located on N.C. Hwy. 53 near White Oak. He said the camp is divided into two distinct camps. One camp area is designed with huts that is geared more to the cub scouts and another section on the lake that the cabins and recreational area is geared more towards the Boy Scouts.

He also said this year’s fundraising effort has generated about $25,200 for the Cape Fear Council thus far. The money raised goes toward programs and upkeep and maintenance of the camp.

President Renee Horton said the Rotary Club pays for the insurance and the electricity for the Scout Hut located on Scout Lane for Troop 600.
