Library invites Cupids of all ages

Craft programs for all ages planned

The Bladen County Public Library system will be looking for some Cupids — young and old alike.

With Valentine’s Day looming on Sunday, Feb. 14, Kelsey Edwards, the director of the county libraries, is hoping folks will get into the spirit of the holiday of hearts, flowers and love — and she recently announced a set of programs that will allow those Cupids to take aim at those most special to them.

“Usually at the main branch we have parties for different holidays,” she said. “We’ve had Christmas programs and had Valentine’s Day parties here at the main branch in the past.”

She added that the two branches, one in Clarkton and another in Bladenboro, used to have children’s Valentine’s Day programs, but it’s been a while since they’ve been done there.

“We’re trying to get the themed kids’programs going again (at the other two branches) so people in other communities have something offered there,” she said.

Children who attend the programs will take part in a reading of a Valentine’s Day story, do crafts together, and take home treat bags from the library.

The children’s programs that have been planned are:

— Bridger Memorial Library on Main Street in Bladenboro, Monday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. Participants must sign up early and may do so by calling 863-4586.

— Clarkton Public Library on College Street in Clarkton, Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. Call 647-3661 to sign up by Tuesday, Feb. 2.

— Bladen County Public Library main branch on Cypress Street in Elizabethtown, Thursday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. A responsible guardian must accompany children. Call 862-6990 to register.

All programs are open to children ages 2-12.

In addition to offering children’s programs, something different has been planned that will get adults involved as well.

“We don’t really have a lot of adult programs, so I was trying to come up with something for them,” said Edwards.

What she came up with was a Valentine’s Day craft program for adults.

“I worked at Cumberland County Library in Fayetteville and did something similar, and the program went over really well,” Edwards said. “We just want for them to have a good time and express their creativity.”

For the adults, Edwards said the library will be offering a couple of crafts that are Valentine- or love-themed, and will be providing all the materials that are needed.

The program will take place at the main branch in Elizabethtown on Thursday, Feb 11, at 10:30 a.m. Those wishing to participate may call 862-6990 to register.
