2 Cumberland Co. school employees charged with assaulting students


FAYETTEVILLE (WNCN) – Two Cumberland County Public School system employees face child abuse charges after police said they assaulted students at Pauline Jones Middle School.

Danny Mandell Pettigrew, of Fayetteville faces a misdemeanor charge of child abuse after police said he grabbed a child by the neck and chest before throwing the child against a wall on Nov. 10.

Pettigrew is a teacher at Pauline Jones Middle School.

Terry Van Drake, of Fayetteville faces three counts of child abuse after police said he assaulted students at Pauline Jones Middle School on three separate occasions.

Drake serves as the safe school coordinator at the school.

On Oct. 28, police said Drake grabbed a child by the wrist and pulled them from a desk. Later that day, he grabbed the child by the wrist, forced the child from the desk and to the ground.

Drake then put his knee in the child’s back, police said.

Also on Oct. 28, Drake grabbed a minor by the wrist and pulled the boy off balance before taking him to the ground, police said. The two struggled on the ground until Drake pulled the minor’s hands behind his back. Drake then pushed the minor into a desk.

On Oct. 30, Drake again grabbed a student by the wrist and pulled them out of a desk to the ground. Drake forced the child’s hands behind their back before forcing them into a desk, police said.

Drake and Pettigrew were placed in the Cumberland County Jail where they received unsecured bonds.

Both have court appearances Dec. 30.
