HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) — Rescue teams are searching a creek in Socastee after a mother claimed she threw a 5-month-old infant into it, according to police.

Someone claiming to be the infant’s mother called told dispatch that she had thrown the infant into the creek behind a house on Sims Drive in Socastee, said Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County Police. The woman apparently got out of the water and went to a house on Shem Creek Circle, then walked back to Sims Drive. Police have brought in dogs to try to track that path to corroborate the story.

Fire rescue, beach patrol, boats, jet skis, and canoes are in creeks all the way down to Intracoastal waterway trying to locate the baby and investigate. Creeks and ditches are overrunning with water at the moment.

Lt. Denis said the mother is in custody while the investigation is going on, and she was there when police arrived. Police also say the mother is being transported to Conway hospital to get medical clearance then sit her down and talk to her.
