OAK ISLAND (WECT) — A home in Oak Island was destroyed in a fire Saturday night.

A neighbor called 911 and reported the fire around 8 p.m. in the 6600 block of West Beach Drive.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

The siding of the home next door was also on fire. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the inside of the second home. The vinyl siding burned off and the windows shattered in the heat. The windows also shattered on the home on the other side of the fully engulfed house.

The family, who lived in the home that caught fire, was out trick-or-treating when the fire started. Fire officials believe the family’s cat may have died in the blaze.

Oak Island Fire Chief Chris Anselmo said one firefighter sustained minor injuries from a fall. That firefighter was treated on the scene. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution and was back at work Sunday.

Fire officials have not pinpointed the cause of the fire because the home was completely gutted. Several people reported hearing explosions during the fire; however, Anselmo said the cause of those explosions could not be determined.
