SOUTHPORT — A Southport man was killed and a woman was taken to the hospital after their car crashed on Hwy. 87 in Southport on Saturday afternoon.
According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, Leonard Joseph Rosa, 76, was driving north near Hwy. 211 around 4:45 p.m. when he crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left and struck a ditch. The vehicle continued a short distance before striking a plastic pipe and tree.
According to the medical examiner, Rosa died as a result of a “medical condition” before the collision, so the accident is not considered a highway death.
The female passenger in the vehicle suffered a broken leg. She was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
