ELIZABETHTOWN —An off-duty Robeson County sheriff’s deputy and a woman he was with were killed in a jet-ski accident near Lock and Dam No. 2 on the Cape Fear River near Elizabethtown.

According to Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey, in a statement released Thursday afternoon, Thomas Bradley Carter, 30, and Charlotte Paige McLellan, 27, were the victims of the accident.

Carter had worked as a sheriff’s deputy since Nov. 9, 2010.

Chief Deputy Rodney Hester, with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, said the accident was reported just before 7 a.m. Thursday. A fisherman reportedly found one body and, following a search, the second body was found.

Sealey said Carter, who lived in Pembroke, and McLellan, who lived in Lumberton, were dead when he arrived on the scene later in the morning.

He added that the accident remains under investigation by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.
