BLADENBORO —A fatal shooting outside the Ash Street apartments in Bladenboro early Monday morning remains under investigation by the Bladenboro Police Department.
According to Chief Chris Hunt, the shooting took place at about 2:30 a.m. and, when officers arrived, the victim — identified as Patricia Scott Cooper, 38 — had suffered a single gunshot to the back but was still alive.
Cooper was transported to Bladen County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 3:31 a.m., according to Assistant County Coroner Kenneth Clark.
Hunt, who said he didn’t want to divulge too many details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing, did say the incident began as a domestic dispute.
“There was apparently an argument between Cooper and her ex-boyfriend (Johnny Yarborough) at his residence,” Hunt said. “There was nobody else involved, as far as we can tell.”
Yarborough, according to Hunt, remains a “person of interest” as the investigation continues. No arrest warrant had been served as of Wednesday.
“We’re still trying to determine and piece together the circumstances,” Hunt said.
An autopsy was performed on Cooper’s body Tuesday at the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh, but Hunt said he can’t release those initial findings yet.
He did say that the State Bureau of Investigation would be assisting in parts of the investigation as it goes forward, but he gave no timetable for any arrest to be made.
“The department certainly wants to offer its condolences to the family of Patricia Cooper,” Hunt added. “Anytime there is a loss of life, it’s unfortunate and tragic.”
