November 8, 2013
I would like to say congratulations to Rufus Duckworth for winning the mayor’s race and to Billy Ray Benson, Timothy Benson Jr. and Jeff Atkinson for winning seats on the town council.
This was an election marred with controversy on both sides and 2013 should be remembered only for change in Bladenboro, but unfortunately it won’t be.
There was a quorum on the current town government for a gathering held a few weeks ago, which is against campaigning laws, and there was unethical misconduct on the other side when three candidates joined together to control the town vote. There was also talk of votes being bought — one person stated he would buy the election if he could.
I am glad for a change in Bladenboro, but it’s how the change came that bothers me and a lot like me. There were people who voted who did not live in the city limits. I saw that with my own eyes.
At the polls in Bladenboro the candidates have always stood around handed out cards and talk all day. During this election, you would have thought the Hatfieds and McCoys where there, neither side was talking to the other very much, if any.
This year will go down in history for the turnout and the change, but it will always be remembered as the wrong way to do things during campaigning.
We will see what the new government has planned for the next four years. I just hope it doesn’t get bogged down in paperwork and excuses.
