FAYETTEVILLE — A leak at the Dupont-Fayetteville Works Plant on Thursday sent five employees to the hospital, including one who was found unconscious.

The plant is located just inside the Bladen County line on Hwy. 87 North.

According to information released by Dupont Operations representatives, a methylene chloride leak occurred at about 3:30 p.m. No cause of the leak was given. Methylene chloride is used as a coolant in the facility’s manufacturing process.

The release claimed that crews were able to contain the leak and that the community was never at risk.

The hazmat incident sent the five employees to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. The most serious individual was then transferred to Chapel Hill. No conditions on any of the victims was given.

According to published reports, methylene chloride is a carcinogen that can produce vomiting, nausea, light-headedness, headaches and mental confusion.
