ELIZABETHTOWN — An inmate at the Bladen County Jail has been charged with assaulting another inmate on Wednesday.

According to Capt. Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, the two men had a prior history and the jailer was unaware of it.

Shawn Lindbergh Melvin, 39, of Elizabethtown was arrested earlier on Wednesday on a child support order for arrest, failing to appear in court and driving while his license was revoked. Melvin was given a $1,000 cash bond on the child support order and a $3,000 secured bond for the other charges.

He was then placed in the Bladen County Jail. His cellmate was Eric Christopher Bennett, 27, of Elizabethtown, who was arrested back in February and charged with attempted murder.

“Melvin is one of the victims in that case, which was investigated by the Elizabethtown Police Department,” Hester said. “As soon as the jailer placed Melvin into the cell with Bennett, Melvin attacked him.”

Hester said Melvin slammed Bennett to the floor, causing a laceration to the back of his head. Bennett was taken to Bladen County Hospital, where he received medical attention and was released back to a different cell at the jail.

Melvin was charged by deputies with the assault on Bennett.
