CLARKTON —The newly appointed Clarkton Police Chief Ray Battle was sworn in at the re-convened meeting of the Clarkton Town Board on Tuesday night.

Bladen County Clerk of Superior Court Niki Dennis administered the oath of office to Battle, who was joined by his wife Dawn. The only other dignitaries present were Elizabethtown Police Chief Bobby Kinlaw, according to reports.

Battle is expected to serve as a one-man force.

It has been about 10 years since Clarkton had any kind of police department.

In an earlier interview, Clarkton Town Councilman Keith Croom said that the board had discussed the possibility of resurrecting the police department for a awhile.

The board appropriated $85,000 in its budget which includes salary and benefits and start up expenses such as new equipment, a vehicle and maintenance. The town has purchased a retired police vehicle according to Croom.

In the board’s earlier meeting this month, Battle requested a credit card for gasoline with a limit of $1,000. The board approved the card.
